How to Find the Perfect Throw Rug

Throw rugs are team nicely with other soft furnishings like cushions to create cohesion in your styling. Typically, we see them in bedrooms and living rooms, but they’re perfect to have on hand wherever you might like to add an extra layer and ramp up the comfort level or even to take with you as you move about your house.

Let’s take a look at the sizes, colours, and materials available so you can find the ideal throw rug to perfect that space you’re thinking of.

Types of Throw Rugs

Size

You’ll find there are a variety of throw rug sizes depending on the brand, but they are typically rectangular in shape and sized to fit across the width of your bed. The most common throw rug sizes are:

• 130 x 150cm
• 130 x 170cm 
• 150 x 280cm

These sizes provide options for Single size beds all the way through to Super King size beds. Bed runners are also a great option for the end of your bed, and you’ve probably seen them at hotels you’ve stayed at – these are usually about 60 x 240cm but are typically for decoration and tend to lack the comfort throw rugs have to offer.

Colours

Often brands will release a collection of throws in different colourways so you can choose a style and colour to match your taste. Some of our most popular colours are:

Colour is a personal choice – it’s just a matter of finding the one you like best. Use the existing colour palette of your room as a starting point, and use the positioning of your throw to pull feature colours into the centre of any room.

Materials

If you’re looking to add a little bit of luxury, we recommend faux fur, velvet, or an oversized knit style. If you want an organic feel in your space, we recommend natural fibres like cotton or linen.

Heavy throw rugs, such as wool knits, will lend themselves to cooler climates, while lightweight options such as linen will provide light coverage for those destinations where the winters are quite mild or lean towards tropical. Material is also a big part of the longevity of your throw rug. It’s best to consider how you’ll use your throw rug so it will stay the distance – will it be purely decorative or used daily and require regular washing?

It’s also worth noting - if you have allergies, we recommend natural fibres like wool, cotton, or bamboo to avoid triggering your allergies (unless, of course, it's specific to one of those fibres). We recommend you also look at the washing instructions – a throw rug that washes well can be washed frequently to ensure it’s not trapping dust and triggering sneezes!

How to style a throw rug with cushions

Like the icing on a cake, cushions and throws are the quickest way to have a strong impact on any room’s visual flavour. Together they can take a bland space and make it feel inviting and lived in. They also offer the ultimate versatility – it’s so easy to swap out and mix and match cushions and throws to transform a space over time.

Start by considering your base layer – if we’re looking at a bedroom, this will be your quilt covers set, or if we’re styling a living room space, this will be the colour and material of your sofa. You want your cushions and throw rugs to complement your quilt set or sofa to create visual contrast. This doesn’t mean you need to go with bold colour choices. Contrast can be between different types of textures, too - for example, you might pair a rich navy cotton quilt cover with a series of delicate, neutral-coloured linen cushions and throws to create a modern coastal feel.

There is a multitude of ways you can play with colours, textures and shapes, and endless ways to adjust the atmosphere of any room!
